behind the remix with Styles Munson

Streets are saying that I Enjoy Music now has a remix label!! Its first release just came out, I Enjoy Remixes Vol. 1, which features the artists Sun Kin and Styles Munson remixing each others' songs. It's rather mega, if I do say so myself.

We love a good remix here at I Enjoy Music, so I thought I'd send a remix-themed questionnaire to both Sun Kin + Styles Munson and hear their remix perspectives. Here we have Styles Munson...

"How can I make this sound completely different from the source material? How can I make this my own thing?"

“I can’t believe this took me as long as it did.”

I think all the manual vocal nudging I did to get the right swing to fit with the vibe of the song (thank you Ableton). I tend to do that on a lot of remixes because it's fun to mold voices to further push a song away from its original.

100%. Remixes are sort of a No Rulez Zone for me. With remixes I get to look at all the multitracks, see what sounds interesting enough to keep/sample/manipulate, and then add my own stuff to it without thinking about context at all.

I think the first one that really caught my attention when I was a teenager was probably Flying Lotus's remix of Mia Doi Todd's "My Room is White.” It wasn't officially released at the time and I had no idea it was a remix. It just lived on my iPod for years.

Schaus - "Love What You're Saying (big thanks remix)"

Media Jeweler - "Smile (Styles Munson's Peace & Luck remix)"

and shh... don't tell anyone but this ain't my first Sun Kin rodeo - "Coming Back, Again (big thanks remix)"

I usually (or used to?) use the moniker big thanks when making electronic leaning stuff. I think I've let that concept of separation go a little bit as I've gotten older (though I do have an album of big thanks stuff I've been sitting on 👀...anyways).

I think it has to hold its own without context—if I can hear the remix first and go "dang that's a good song" without knowing it's a remix.

The dialogue from a 2-person play where each actor plays multiple characters… I’d cut out a half second following each “ss” sound and try to make something interesting with the limitations I gave myself. No Rulez
Thanks to Sun Kin and Styles Munson for participating in this first remix venture. Check out their link aggregation: Sun Kin + Styles Munson.
