Music Moots with Stay-at-Home Cousin (sampler platter)
We are extremely back with Music Moots™, the blogseries where I ask someone to recommend me a song they like, and then I listen to the song and then write a little about it.
Today we've got Stay-at-Home Cousin! Aka the musical persona of Maya Gaster Moll, who just put out a wonderful indie pop song called "Melee in the Background." I know Maya from Twitter back when Twitter was good, but I didn't know they played music—turns out they've been hiding some bops in their back pocket! And that's no fun...👊 BRING 👊 OUT 👊 YOUR 👊 BOPS.

Stay-at-Home Cousin has a new single out called "Melee in the Background," a quirky head-nodder about a house party with some amazing...do they call it 'auxiliary percussion'? The drums on this are sick (Justin Peroff from Broken Social Scene played on this song)...there are some sneaky shimmery chimes...very subtle DJ scratching?? Do I also hear the sound of a lighter lighting something? Party verisimilitude. Yes. There's gonna be a Stay-At-Home Cousin album out later this year, you heard it here, perhaps not first, but definitely not last.
I should say too, in their email Maya mentioned starting to finally produce their own music after having twins, recording during naptimes and whatnot, and I very much relate to that. I STAY blogging during naptime. Shout out to everyone making the most of naptime. The children will respect us for our endeavours...or so I tell myself.
Anyway please enjoy this Sampler Platter of Music Moots picks from Maya...a quickfire round, as Top Chef would call it...
Baths - "Eden"
[S-A-H C] i'm not only a big fan of will weisenfeld, and have been since back in the day when Cerulean first came out, but he is also the reason i am a recording artist- i was lucky enough to be accepted for production lessons with him in 2024, after he had finished Gut but wasn't touring for it yet, and he taught me to use Ableton. i only got 5 or 6 lessons with him total, but before i met him i only played acoustic guitar and now i produce my own music and have an album on the way. so that's a cool connection, plus this single is exquisite! more people should know and love this song!!!
[Molly] The way those background vocals waver in on "I aaaam what he'll be drinking" is so cool. Exuberance, baby.
"Ya no quiero pensar en nada" - Perritos Genéricos
[S-A-H C] i love this band so much. as a (half)mexican myself, i would love to rep a mexican indie artist on your blog! this song is lyrically simple (it means "i don't want to think about anything anymore") but a lasting bop in my opinion.
[Molly] Those whiny buzzsaw geetars, yeah boi. When we're in the car together, I like to sneakily add to queue the songs that I think are going to get the "Hey, who's this?" comment from my husband, and I'm happy to say that "Ya no quiero pensar en nada" passed the test w/ flying colors.
"c2.0" - Charli XCX
[S-A-H C] this is one of my favorite charli songs ever, off my favorite charli xcx album how i'm feeling now which was imo the best pandemic album we got out of that time period. i also love the original song "clique" that it remixes, which maybe gives it more emotional weight for me, but this song really gets me in the chest every single time and i wish it got just as much love as party 4 u because it is just as good!!!! (more love songs about best friends, please!)
[Molly] how i'm feeling now gang, stand up. This was definitely one of the things to make me Feel Something during 2020 (honorable mentions go to Fetch The Bolt Cutters, and a batch of pot brownies that had some incredibly powerful butter that I made with the Bon Appetit recipe?). But I feel like I didn't give "c2.0" its due at the time. Charli is so good at creating these moments of electro-glossolalia, layering and repeating syllables until they lose all former meaning, then re-emerge with a new meaning—another example being "B2b" off Brat, with its trancelike BACK-BACK-BACK-BACK-BACK reiteration.
"Rocksteady" - Built to Spill
[S-A-H C] off the latest album by indie rock legend BtS, this song has been stuck in my head since the first day that the album dropped, and it will absolutely never get old! i've covered it on multiple instruments at this point just for fun because i love this song so much!
[Molly] No song constructed upon such a pleasant and casually ambulatory bassline shall fail.
Thank you Stay-at-Home Cousin! Listen to "Melee in the Background" out now and check out their link aggregation.
And thanks for reading I Enjoy Music! If you like it, tell a friend.
